Crash Closes I-5 Lanes, Spills Diesel, Sulfuric Acid

The West Street overpass in Chehalis was not substantially damaged during a crash that closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 Thursday morning, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The WSDOT assessed the damage and reopened the bridge at about 9:30 a.m.

The crash was reported at  about 6:36 a.m., according to WSDOT.

All lanes of southbound I-5 at mile marker 78.4 were still blocked as of press time.

“We’re looking at a substantial closure,” said WSDOT spokeswoman Tamara Greenwell.

A semi truck was on its side and debris was spread over the freeway’s lanes Thursday morning.

The state Department of Ecology and WSDOT were at the scene responding to a diesel and sulfuric acid spill as of 9:30 a.m.

The semi-truck was hauling batteries, Greenwell said.
