A driver has been arrested on several charges after reportedly hitting a pedestrian Wednesday afternoon while allegedly driving under the influence.

Christian D. Brown, 30, a transient, was arrested after the incident on suspicion of DUI, possession of heroin and vehicular assault.

The crash was reported at 12:24 p.m. A green Acura passenger car hit a pedestrian after driving up on the sidewalk along South Gold Street near the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds. He was transported to Providence Centralia Hospital to await a medical helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was transported in serious but stable condition.

“Units responded to the report of an elderly male struck by vehicle in the area of Security State Bank, outside the fairgrounds,” according to a press release from the Riverside Fire Authority. An elderly male was found unconscious on the sidewalk on the east side of the road with traumatic injuries.

The man was initially unconscious but regained consciousness after receiving emergency medical care.

The Centralia Police Department and Lewis County Sheriff’s Office also responded. About a half hour after the crash, investigators were working to piece together the events leading to the incident.

“We’re not sure exactly what happened,” said Officer Doug Lowrey, of the Centralia Police Department, shortly after the crash.

The vehicle’s windshield was shattered on the driver’s side.
