The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office is one of the first law enforcement agencies in the state to implement a prepaid card system upon a defendant’s release from jail.
When released, defendants will be given their funds held in trust on a prepaid MasterCard.
“One of the main goals for TCSO going to this system was to reduce the number of check fraud incidents,” according to a TCSO press release. “Prior to implementing this system, defendants with trust funds were written checks when released to the community.”
The card system will also allow released defendants to have immediate access to their money through ATMs without check-cashing fees.
