State Auditor’s Office Still Investigating Mineral Fire Finances

By The Chronicle

The Washington State Auditor’s Office is expecting to soon finish an investigation into the misappropriation of public funds in Lewis County Fire District 9 in Mineral, said Kathleen Cooper, of the auditor’s office.

While the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office earlier reported the auditor’s office was finished with its investigation, Cooper said the amount of money reported to the sheriff’s office this year as being stolen was a preliminary estimate.

In June, the Sheriff’s Office reported those preliminary estimates showed $5,000 in fuel misappropriated by former fire district volunteer Brady Mounce, who has been charged with second-degree theft in Lewis County Superior Court and has pleaded guilty to related theft charges in Pierce County.

At that time, the auditor’s office showed $20,300 misappropriated from the district.

Cooper said the finished investigation with updated information will be available soon.
