One Dead Following Boating Accident on Chehalis River

By The Chronicle |

An afternoon fishing trip on the Chehalis River ended in a fatality Monday.

Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Commander Dusty Breen said one man is dead and another has been transported to Providence Centralia Hospital following a boating accident west of Adna.

The names of the victims have not been released, but Breen said both are men.

He said at about 12:30 p.m., aid and deputies were summoned to the accident, which occurred near milepost 2 of River Road.

The men were traveling down the river in an aluminum boat with a motor when they went through a rough section of water, Breen said.

The boat began taking on water, and as the boat was tipping, both men jumped out.

One of the men was wearing a life vest and made it to shore. After he got to the river bank, he realized his friend was still in the water. The man went back into the river and pulled his friend out and performed CPR for about 20 minutes.

He then went across the river and waved down a cyclist on the Willapa Hills Trail to call for help.

Lewis County Fire District 6 and American Medical Response came to the scene to provide medical assistance.

The Lewis County Coroner’s Office has yet to notify the next of kin.

Authorities from the sheriff’s office were determining how to remove the boat from the water at 3 p.m.
