Coroner Identifies Brothers Killed in Apparent Murder-Suicide

The Lewis County Coroner’s Office has identified two men killed Sunday night in what the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating as a possible murder-suicide as Jeffry C. Wachter, 59, of Malone and Paul Wachter, 56, of Winlock.

According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and aid crews responded at 4:14 p.m. Oct. 8 to the 600 block of Tennessee Road in rural Winlock after receiving a report that a 63-year-old woman fell down a well.

The woman’s two brothers were at the scene and began having a verbal dispute. Jeffry Wachter was asked to leave, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The woman was rescued from the well and taken to a hospital. A few hours later, Jeffry Wachter returned to the home and allegedly shot Paul Wachter before shooting himself.

Paul Wachter died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head, torso and left arm. His manner of death has been classified as homicide.
